1858: Lincoln warned about a “house divided”

house2bdivided
On the eve of Father’s Day, I am reminded of my great Uncle Joaquin who never left Cuba. He was a great fan of Abraham Lincoln and read just about everything that he said or wrote.
Uncle Joaquin would always quote or recall the words of Lincoln.
On this day in 1858, senatorial candidate Abraham Lincoln addresses the Illinois Republican Convention in Springfield. He warned the nation faced a crisis that could destroy the Union. He told the 1,000 delegates in a very ominous tone: “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
Two years later, he was elected president and the Civil War followed.
