The late and great Kirby Puckett was born in Chicago on this day in 1960. He died in 2006.
He broke with the Twins in 1984 and became one of the best in the game: .318 career batting average, 2,304 hits & 1,085 RBI in 1,783 games.
Who knows what numbers he would put together in 2,500 games? or even 2,750? My guess is that he would easily retired with 3,000 hits and 1,500 RBI.
Like most baseball fans, I loved Kirby Puckett baseball, i.e the hustle that he brought to every game.
He was a great player who left us some wonderful memories, such as a great catch and extra inning homer to win game 6 of the very exciting '91 series.
It's still hard to believe that Puckett retired in 1995 because of an illness. He was only 34.
Puckett was selected to the Hall of Fame in 2001.
Thanks for all of the memories!
