1776: Juan Bautista de Anza discovers San Francisco

On this day in......March 28, 1776:

"Juan Bautista de Anza, one of the great western pathfinders of the 18th century, arrives at the future site of San Francisco with 247 colonists."

it took years to settle what we now call San Francisco.  By 1852, the population had reached 36,000.

Thanks to Sr. De Anza, we got songs like "San Francisco" by Scott McKenzie.....the composer is John Phillips of Mamas & Papas.....
