1786: James Monroe married Elizabeth Kortight

We remember James Monroe as one of The Founding Fathers, our 5th president and The Monroe Doctrine about European interference in the Americas.    He was from Virginia.

On this day in 1786, James Monroe married Elizabeth Kortright, a beautiful young woman from New York:
The Monroes settled in Virginia and promptly started a family. Elizabeth gave birth to two daughters, Eliza and Marie. A son, James, died in infancy. Elizabeth and the girls followed Monroe to Paris when President George Washington appointed him ambassador to France in 1794.
There, he and Elizabeth became enthusiastic Francophiles. Elizabeth, with her sophisticated social graces, adapted easily to European society.
The French aristocracy referred to her as la belle americaine.
James and Elizabeth Monroe left The White House in 1825.   She died in 1830 and Monroe a year later.
