Happy Halloween (specially to the baby boomers)

Happy Halloween.    Of course, there is a serious side to the cartoon above.

Sooner or later, we will have to deal with our entitlement crisis.

So far, much of the political class is not very fixing Social Security or entitlements!

We remember Dave McNally (1942-2002)

Dave McNally was one of my favorite Orioles.    He broke with Baltimore in 1962 and won 184 games.

Along the way, Dave pitched in 4 World Series, 2 LCS and won 87 games over 1968-71.

Just a great lefty who kept you in every game.

McNally won game 4 of the 1966 World Series with a 1-0 shutout of the LA Dodgers.    He hit a grand slam in game 4 of the 1970 World Series against Cincinnati.

He was 7-4 with a 2.49 ERA in 9 post seasons series with Baltimore.

What radio show would Orson Wells do about this election?

large_war-of-the-worlds
On October 30, 1938, millions of Americans had their dinner and sat down to listen to the radio. It turned out to be a rather unusual Halloween night:
Sunday evening in 1938 was prime-time in the golden age of radio, and millions of Americans had their radios turned on. But most of these Americans were listening to ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his dummy “Charlie McCarthy” on NBC and only turned to CBS at 8:12 p.m. after the comedy sketch ended and a little-known singer went on. By then, the story of the Martian invasion was well underway.
Welles introduced his radio play with a spoken introduction, followed by an announcer reading a weather report. Then, seemingly abandoning the storyline, the announcer took listeners to “the Meridian Room in the Hotel Park Plaza in downtown New York, where you will be entertained by the music of Ramon Raquello and his orchestra.” …  An announcer broke in to report that “Professor Farrell of the Mount Jenning Observatory” had detected explosions on the planet Mars. Then the dance music came back on, followed by another interruption in which listeners were informed that a large meteor had crashed into a farmer’s field in Grovers Mills, New Jersey.
Soon, an announcer was at the crash site describing a Martian emerging from a large metallic cylinder. “Good heavens,” he declared, “something’s wriggling out of the shadow like a gray snake. Now here’s another and another one and another one. They look like tentacles to me … I can see the thing’s body now. It’s large, large as a bear. It glistens like wet leather.” But that face, it… it … ladies and gentlemen, it’s indescribable…”
The Martians mounted walking war machines and fired “heat-ray” weapons at the puny humans gathered around the crash site. They annihilated a force of 7,000 National Guardsman, and after being attacked by artillery and bombers the Martians released a poisonous gas into the air. Soon “Martian cylinders” landed in Chicago and St. Louis. The radio play was extremely realistic, with Welles employing sophisticated sound effects and his actors doing an excellent job portraying terrified announcers and other characters.
They say that a million people fell for it.
Maybe a 2016 version of Orson Welles could do a radio show about a presidential candidate who used a private server as Secretary of State.
Then he can tell us about the lady’s assistant who is married to a rather bizarre fellow addicted to sending strange texts to young women.
And the climax of the story is when the FBI discovers that the bizarre fellow had classified information in his laptop.
Wonder if any radio producer would buy that story? My guess is that that they would reject it on the grounds that they don’t think any candidate for president would be that stupid.
Orson, where are you when we need you?

Are the Democrats victims of their identity politics?

Cartoonist Gary Varvel: FBI looks into Hillary's email server
God only knows where the new FBI intervention will take us.  I don’t know for sure, but I can safely say it is not the Clintons’ destination of choice.
Since this private server story broke in 2015, I have asked the same question: how can the Democratic Party allow this woman to get nominated?  Didn’t someone at the party headquarters connect the dots and realize what Mrs. Clinton did?  After all, we are talking about a secretary of state using an unapproved server to conduct the diplomatic business of the U.S.
So why didn’t a group of senior Democrats go to the Clintons’ residence and quietly call on Mrs. Clinton to drop out?  Remember when a group of GOP senators paid a visit on President Nixon in the summer of 1974 and told him to resign?
Instead, the party circled the wagons and invested itself in a Clinton, or the first female presidency.  Even Senator Sanders, who should have argued the national security risks of a private server, just said he was sick and tired of hearing about the emails.
Where are the Democrats today?
First, Mrs. Clinton’s judgment is under the microscope again, from the private server to surrounding herself with people with little regard for national security issues.  Have you seen what they say of Mrs. Clinton in these leaks?  My guess is that Bush 41 or Bush 43 staffers were not speaking that way of their bosses.
Second, the Democrats are now victims of their focus on identity politics:
a) Not one of them had the courage to call out President Obama on Obamacare.  They had to know that the numbers would never add up.
b) Not one had the courage to call on Mrs. Clinton to drop out over her total disregard for national security.
Why didn’t one Democrat stand up against Obamacare or call on Mrs. Clinton to put country over party?
The answer is identity politics.  They were afraid of criticizing the first black president’s signature legislation or call on the first potential female president to drop out.
Forty-one years ago this month, Bill Lee, who was known as a junk ball pitcher, gave up a three-run home run to Tony Perez in game 7 of the 1975 World Series.  Bill said later that he lived by the junk pitch and would die by the junk pitch.
Let’s paraphrase Lee and say this: the Democrats live by identity politics and will now die by identity politics.
The Democrats put race and gender over common sense and now have to live with high premiums and a candidate no one trusts.

We remember John Adams (1735-1826)

This is what John Adams wrote to Abigail about July 4th:
"I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival.

It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty.

It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more."

Check it out.

It is a great story about the making of the US.

It is also a great story about a wonderful couple, John and Abigail Adams.

Happy # 81 to Jim Perry, the other Perry brother

We say happy # 81 to the other Perry, i.e. Jim Perry, brother of Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry.

Jim broke with the Indians in 1959 and won 18 in his second year.

He was traded to Minnesota in 1963 and that's where he won the 1970 AL Cy Young:  24-12 with a 3.04 ERA.

Perry retired with 215 wins and a 3.45 ERA.   He was a very good pitcher.

The Obama administration forgets about the law at the UN

b9315554951z-1_20141218161107_000_g5o9es2p8-1-0
This week, the Obama administration did not show up for the UN vote against the Cuba embargo. It went like thisas reported by the New York Times:
Making a bit of history, the United States on Wednesday abstained for the first time in an annual General Assembly condemnation of the half-century-old American trade embargo against Cuba.
The abstention — a break from the “no” vote the United States delegation has always cast — was another important signal by the Obama administration of its intention to fully repair relations with Cuba, including an end to the embargo.
The reconciliation began two years ago when President Obama abandoned the policy of his predecessors to isolate the Castro government in Cuba and moved to restore diplomatic ties with the island nation of 11 million.
The United States and Cuba formally re-established embassies in each other’s capitals in July 2015, ending more than more than five decades of Cold War-era enmity.
But the embargo, which can only be rescinded by Congress, remains in force.
Yes, the embargo remains in force because it is the law of the land. This is why only Congress can rescind it!
Let’s recall a bit of history about the embargo:
Following the events of 1961–62, economic and diplomatic isolation became the major prongs of U.S. policy toward Cuba.
This continued even after the Soviet Union’s collapse.
Washington strengthened the embargo with the 1992 Cuba Democracy Act and 1996 Helms-Burton Act (PDF), which state that the embargo may not be lifted until Cuba holds free and fair elections and transitions to a democratic government that excludes the Castros. (Raúl has said he will leave office in 2018.)
To be fair, honest people can disagree about the embargo. I’ve had disagreements with other Cubans or Cuban Americans. The disagreements are not generational. In other words, some Cubans of my parents generation believe that the embargo should end and some Cuban Americans like me believe it should stay.
The bottom line is that the Obama administration is mocking U.S. law and the Congress in front of the world.
Why doesn’t President Obama call on Congress to end the embargo? At the same time, why didn’t he demand reforms from Cuba, or the prerequisites required by law to end the embargo? Most of all, why didn’t he call on the Cuban government to settle the claims of U.S. citizens for property stolen years ago?
As a U.S. citizen, I find this astonishing. I find it remarkable that the U.S. government would pander to governments at the UN over Cuba.

1886: Another anniversary of The Statue of Liberty

We remember another anniversary of The Statue of Liberty:
"On this day in 1886, President Grover Cleveland dedicates the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor.
The statue’s full name was Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World. It had been a gift from French citizens to their American friends in recognition of the two countries’ commitment to liberty and democracy and their alliance during the American Revolutionary War, which had begun 110 years earlier.
The 151-foot copper statue was built in France and shipped to New York in 350 separate parts.
It arrived in the city on June 17, 1886, and over the next several months was reassembled while electricians worked to wire the torch to light up at night."
It is one of the country's great landmarks.

WikiLeaks is today’s version of the blue dress that didn’t go to the cleaner!

monica0512
The younger readers may not remember Monica and the blue dress that she saved in the closet. God only knows what Monica was thinking but it did prove that then President Clinton was lying through his teeth about their “encounter” in the Oval Office. Then President Clinton survived conviction in the U.S. Senate, in large part because unemployment was low and everyone was enjoying the returns on their mutual funds.
Frankly, the Clinton team thought that they get away with it until the blue dress returned to the story.
Well, something similar has happened to the Clintons in 2016. They tried to get away with it, but this time a “leak” showed them up to be a couple of serial liars.
This week, we learned more about this criminal enterprise headed by a former president and secretary of state. As a Mexican friend told me yesterday, these Clintons are making our politics look clean and honest.
We learned from Wikileaks that there were serious concerns in house about that private server:
Attorneys wondered out loud in questions passed along in a 2015 bombshell email to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign why Clinton inexplicably sent secure documents on a private email server and then further deleted documents without consulting anyone, as such a move “smacks of acting above the law.”
The email, leaked by WikiLeaks as part of its release of Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta’s correspondence, dates back to June 21, 2015, and discusses in unusually frank detail the scandalous nature of Clinton’s use of a private email server.
The email contains several questions from other lawyers passed along from Erika Rottenberg, a lawyer with extensive experience in the policy and tech world with ties to the Clinton campaign.
Then there is President Clinton and all of that money, as the New York Times reported:
In another email, Mr. Band wrote that Mr. Clinton had even received gifts from some donors.
The tensions came to a head when Chelsea Clinton helped enlist an outside law firm to audit the Clinton Foundation’s practices. Some interviewees told the audit team that the donors “may have an expectation of quid pro quo benefits in return for gift.” The audit suggested the foundation “ensure that all donors are properly vetted and that no inappropriate quid pro quos are offered to donors in return for contributions.”
The advice proved prescient as Mrs. Clinton faced intense scrutiny about whether donors to the Clinton Foundation had received special access to her State Department or other rewards. In August, the foundation said it would no longer accept foreign donations should Mrs. Clinton win the White House.
Then now we hear that President Obama was, incredibly, communicating with his Secretary of State using a private server and email. Does anyone believe in national security among these people?  After all, there is a very good reason that the president and others use a government email account. It’s called protecting our national security and the many people around the world who provide us information about this or that.
Frankly, this is sick. You can not have a current secretary of state married to a former president who is travelling the world asking for money. It may be legal. It may buy some eyeglasses for kids in Haiti.
But it is simply unacceptable, especially it was done in secret because they thought that they’d get away with it.
On Monday, I went over to the library and voted for Mr. Trump. Honestly, it was more a vote against Mrs. Clinton. Yes, every day I feel more and more convinced that a Clinton Episode 2 is something that must be avoided at all costs.

"96 tears" is 50 years old!

45 years ago, "96 tears" topped the US charts.

"? and the Mysterians" were Mexican American teenagers from Michigan.  Their parents were Mexicans who came here to work in Michigan's farms.

The band's lead vocalist was known as '?" or Question Mark.

The song was written and produced by Rudy Martinez.  We believe that he was "?" or the lead vocalist.

The song had a "killer organ"!  It was a 'must" for garage bands or teens dancing at the Friday night school dance.

To be fair, the group did have a follow up hit that made the Top 30.  However, they never charted big again.

Whatever happened to this band?  I don't know but this was a great song:

"Too many teardrops For one heart to be crying
Too many teardrops For one heart to carry on
You`re way on top now since you left me
Youre always laughing way down at me
But watch out now, I`m gonna get there
We`ll be together for just a little while
And then I`m gonna put you way down here
And you`ll start crying ninety-six tears
Cry, cry
And when the sun comes up, I`ll be on top
You`ll be right down there, looking up
And I might wave, come up here
But I don`t see you waving now
I`m way down here, wondering how
I`m gonna get you but I know now
I`ll just cry, cry, I`ll just cry
Too many teardrops For one heart to be crying
Too many teardrops For one heart to carry on
Youre gonna cry ninety-six tears
Youre gonna cry ninety-six tears
Youre gonna cry, cry, cry, cry now
Youre gonna cry, cry, cry, cry Ninety-six tears
Come on and lemme hear you cry, now
Ninety-six tears, woo
I wanna hear you cry Night and day, yeah, all night long
Uh, ninety-six tears, cry cry cry
Come on, baby Let me hear you cry now, all night long
Uh, ninety-six tears, yeah, come on now
Uh, ninety-six tears...."

We remember President Teddy Roosevelt (1858-1919)

Future President Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York on this day in 1858.

In reality, Theodore Roosevelt was the youngest man who ever became president.   He assumed the presidency at 42 after President McKinley was assassinated.   (Kennedy was the youngest elected at 43 in 1960)

He had an interesting life before stepping into The White House:
Roosevelt served as U.S. Civil Service commissioner from 1885 to 1889 in Washington, D.C., and then as New York City’s police commissioner from 1895 to 1897.
President William McKinley chose Roosevelt as assistant secretary of the Navy later that year.
When the Spanish-American War broke out in 1898, Roosevelt signed up for cavalry service, leading a pivotal battle at San Juan Heights in Cuba. His exemplary leadership in the war contributed to his successful campaign to become New York’s governor in late 1898, an office he held until 1900 when the Republican Party nominated him to be William McKinley’s vice-presidential running mate.
The campaign was successful, but President McKinley was shot by an assassin less than a year into this second term, on September 12, 1901.
Two days later, McKinley died from his wounds and Roosevelt began the first of his two terms in the White House.
Roosevelt, the first president of the 20th century, is also seen by many as the nation’s first modern president.
In 1906, President Roosevelt won the Nobel Peace Prize.  He brokered a peace treaty between Russia and Japan.   Mr. Roosevelt became the first American ever to win a Nobel Prize in any category.

Overall, a very dynamic president who left his mark in many areas.

Game 6 of 2011 Series: What happened Nelson?

We remember one of the craziest games in baseball history.    I am talking about game 6 of the 2011 World Series.

The Rangers went into the bottom of the 9th with a 2 run lead.   The Cardinals tied the game when Nelson Cruz missed a fly ball.     We should add that Cruz was one of the big reasons that Texas was in the Series.

Josh Hamilton hit a 2-run homer in the top of the 10th.    However, the Cardinals came back again.

It finally ended in the bottom of the 12th when Freese hit a walk off HR.

Texas was within a strike in the 9th and 10th and could not close it.    It still hurts!

ISIS will test President Obama’s resolve in Mosul

iraq_map
We do not have soldiers in the forefront, as we did in Iraq or do in Afghanistan. However, we have soldiers near the battle, as we see in this report from CNN:
The forces here — US and Iraqi — are now preparing for the next stage of the offensive that will bring Iraqi and Kurdish Peshmerga forces to the gates of Mosul on three sides of the densely packed city, where as many as 1.2 million civilians still live under ISIS control.
Al Jobouri slips out of the operations room for a quick cigarette; it’s difficult to find a commander — Iraqi or Peshmerga — that doesn’t smoke.
He thinks the offensive is going well but worries about the next stage — saying that as it retreats, ISIS is driving civilians back into Mosul from outlying villages, and using them as cover.
The general is well aware that ISIS is a resourceful enemy capable of hitting back.
He suddenly yells into his cellphone: “You guys need to get them out of there!” They have been flanked by 15 Daesh and I don’t want to hear bad news.”
Let’s review this because our men are a lot closer to the action than the Obama administration, and the media in the tank for BO, is letting on.
Speaking of the media, we should remind you that we are actually fighting in a lot of places around the globe. Can you say five of them? Just curious, but what war resolution are they fighting under?
Back to Mosul. First, let’s pray for the soldiers and our Iraqi allies. My son recently completed his military service and we need to stand with the troops.
Second, I believe that ISIS will soon start testing President Obama’s resolve. ISIS knows that the Western media will soon start publishing stories about the civilians that they are killing.
Third, ISIS will try to attack U.S. soldiers, or better than that, capture them. They hope that such actions will draw the U.S. into a broader war in Mosul and Syria where it can get very complicated. Remember Vietnam? Does President Obama have the backbone to go into Syria like President Nixon did in Cambodia?
We hope that it all works out but there are serious challenges ahead for the next president. Who knows what this will look when # 45 is sworn in?   My guess is that it won’t look good and that further U.S. action will be required.
Sadly, the media has not challenged the candidates. Mr. Trump promises to beat the heck out of ISIS. Mrs. Clinton, like LBJ in ’64, promises that no ground troops will be sent and that her GOP opponent is scary.
In the meantime, we watch Mosul and look forward to some very dark days in the region.
