Happy # 45 to Sgt Pepper

It was "45 years ago today Sgt Pepper taught the band to play".....

Before Sgt Peppers, we used to buy 45s and an LP here and then.  Sgt Peppers made buying LP's a little different.   Sgt Pepper was the first concept LP.  It was the first time that we bought an LP to listen to every song rather than stereo versions of our favorite singles.

Sgt Pepper may have been the most consequential Beatles' LP.  However, it is not tops on my list.  My favorite Beatles' albums are Revolver and Rubber Soul.  (Add "Yesterday and today" in the US).

I think that the period between "Yesterday" and "Eleanor Rigby" was # 1 for me.  From the beauty of "Norwegian Wood" to "Tomorrow never knows", it was my favorite Beatles period.

Sgt Peppers was actually OK.  I just don't think that the songs were as good as the aforementioned LP's.  At the same time, people are entitled to whatever opinion they want to have when it comes to pop songs.   Nobody is ever right or wrong when it comes to pop music.  (I regret that they didn't include "Penny Lane" & "Strawberry Fields Forever" in Sgt Pepper.....but that's the way it goes.)

Click for "Lucy in the sky with diamonds", my favorite song from Sgt Peppers.    John does the lead vocals and Paul comes in on the chorus.

This song reminds me of my English teacher.  She loved these lyrics.  "Good poetry" she used to say.  She was this gorgeous 20-something teacher who was a favorite of every boy in school.  It was "cool" to have an English teacher who appreciated The Beatles.  She was right about these lyrics. They are great.

Wonder what Miss Marcus is doing these days?  Maybe she is telling her grandchildren about these lyrics.  I hope so:

"Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies.
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.
Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,

Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
And she's gone.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds, Ah... Ah...

Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain,

Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies.
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers,
That grow so incredibly high.
Newspaper taxis appear on the shore,

Waiting to take you away.
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds,
And you're gone.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds....
Picture yourself on a train in a station,

With plasticine porters with looking glass ties.
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile,
The girl with kaleidoscope eyes....

Lucy in the sky with diamonds...."
