First weekend of summer memories: Songs and watching girls at the pool

Before cell phones, mp3 files and video games, we spent our summers doing 3 things:

1) Playing baseball, touch football or basketball;

2) Swimming at the public pool;

3) Watching all of those girls in their swim suits; and

4) Loving what they used to call Top 40 radio.

We played baseball in the morning and went swimming in the afternoon.  My mom had one rule:  Take off your shoes and don't bring any dirt into the home.  (We didn't always observe that rule and got an earful often)

We always kept an eye on the girls, specially the high school seniors who were a couple of years older.  Unfortunately, they had no time for "15-year old" boys.  They were more interested in the college guys who came to the pool, too.  We watched it all with envy knowing that our time would eventually come.

We also had Saturday night dances with a guy who played records by the pool.  It was another opportunity to make an impression on the girls but they kept looking at the older guys.   

It's really hard to be 15!  Your choices were a cute but very shy 14-year old girl  who did not speak much or a gorgeous 18 year old who did not pay attention.  Again, it's cruel to be 15!

The music from he Top 40 charts was fantastic.  I recall a couple of songs from those summer days when our biggest concern was catching a girl's eye.

My favorites were Junior Walker's "What does it take your love for me" & The Troggs' "With a girl like you".  They told the story of a 15 year old boy catching a girl's eye.
