The first day of summer and happy 70th birthday to Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys

Brian Wilson celebrates his 70th birthday today.  Like Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson is one of my favorite songwriters.

Isn't it just right that Brian Wilson was born on the first day of summer?  Aren't The Beach Boys synonymous with summer?

The Beach Boys are one of my all time favorite groups.  I grew up listening to Brian Wilson songs & those second to none amazing harmonies.  (The Bee Gees' 3-part harmonies are fabulous too)

My favorite album from the group is "Pet Sounds", a must for any collection.  It came as # 2 in Rolling Stone's Top 500 albums.

Brian was the creative heart of the group.  The Beach Boys hit the charts in the early 1960's and recorded into the 1980's.  They were Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, the three Wilson brothers.   Carl died recently and Dennis was tragically killed in an accident years ago.  The band also included Mike Love, the lead vocalist of "California Girls" and Al Jardine who played guitar.

They recorded "God only knows", one of the best pop songs ever released.  I also like "Heroes and Villains" & "Surfer Girl", a couple of tunes that reveal Brian Wilson's versatility.

Click for the songs and enjoy Brian Wilson's birthday:

"I may not always love you But long as there are stars above you
You never need to doubt it I'll make you so sure about it
God only knows what I'd be without you
If you should ever leave me Though life would still go on believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would living do me
God only knows what I'd be without you
God only knows what I'd be without you
If you should ever leave me Well life would still go on believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would living do me
God only knows what I'd be without you
God only knows what I'd be without you
God only knows...."

"I've been in this town so long that back in the city
I've been taken for lost and gone
And unknown for a long long time
Fell in love years ago
With an innocent girl
From the Spanish and Indian home
Home of the heroes and villains
Once at night Catillian squared the fight

And she was right in the rain of the bullets

that eventually brought her down
But she's still dancing in the night
Unafraid of what a dude'll do in a town full of heroes and villains
Heroes and villains
Just see what you've done
Heroes and villains
Just see what you've done
Stand or fall I know there
Shall be peace in the valley
And it's all an affair Of my life with the heroes and villains
My children were raised
You know they suddenly rise
They started slow long ago Head to toe healthy weathy and wise
I've been in this town so long

So long to the city I'm fit with the stuff
To ride in the rough And sunny down snuff I'm alright
By the heroes and
Heroes and villains

Just see what you've done...."

"Little surfer little one Made my heart come all undone
Do you love me, do you surfer girl
Surfer girl my little surfer girl
I have watched you on the shore
Standing by the oceans roar
Do you love me do you surfer girl
Surfer girl surfer girl
We could ride the surf together
While our love would grow
In my woody I would take you everywhere I go
So I say from me to you
I will make your dreams come true
Do you love me do you surfer girl
Surfer girl my little surfer girl
Well Girl surfer girl my little surfer girl
Well Girl surfer girl my little surfer girl
Well Girl surfer girl my little surfer girl..."
