A word about the passing of Davy Jones, 1945-2012

We just learned that Davy Jones passed away in Florida

We remember Davy Jones as one of The Monkees, the pop group that had a bunch of hits for a couple of years in the late 1960's.

Davy was the girls' favorite.  I remember that my sister had Davy Jones posters on her wall.  She was a huge fan of the group's music and their weekly TV series.

The Monkees sold millions of records.   They were actually a pretty good group and I liked many of their songs, too.  However, their success faded as the TV show went off the air.

Davy was the lead vocalist on "Daydream Believer", a # 1 song in December 1967.

He also sang lead on "A little bit me, a little bit you", another chart topper from March '67 and the second Neil Diamond tune recorded by the group.  (The other was "I'm a believer")

"Oh, I could hide beneath the wings Of the bluebird as she sings.
The six o'clock alarm would never ring.
But it rings and I rise, Wipe the sleep out of my eyes.
My shaving razor's cold and it stings.
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean. Oh, what can it mean.
To a daydream believer And a homecoming queen.
You once thought of me As a white knight on a steed.
Now you know how happy I can be.
Oh, and our good times start and end
Without dollar one to spend. But how much, baby, do we really need.
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean. Oh, what can it mean.
To a daydream believer And a homecoming queen.
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean. Oh, what can it mean.
To a daydream believer And a homecoming queen.
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean. Oh, what can it mean.
To a daydream believer And a homecoming queen."

"Walk out, Girl don't you walk out We've got things to say
Talked out, let's have it talked out Things will be okay
Girl I don't want to find That I'm a little bit wrong
And you're a little bit right
I said girl You know that it's true
It's a little bit me, (a little bit me)
And it's a little bit you... too
Don't know... just what I said wrong But girl I apologize
Don't go... here's where you belong
So wipe the tears from your eyes
Girl I don't want to find That I'm a little bit wrong
And you're a little bit right
I said girl You know that it's true
It's a little bit me And it's a little bit you... too
Oh girl I don't want to find
I'm a little bit wrong And you're a little bit right
I said girl You know that it's true
It's a little bit me And it's a little bit you...too
It's a little bit me It's a little bit you
Girl don't go no no no no no
Girl don't go no no no no no
Hey girl...."

Last, but not least, their TV show was actually "stupid funny".   You may not believe this but it came out in 1966, i.e. a pretty good year for TV as Ed Driscoll reminds us:

"You could make a case that 1966 was a seminal year in boomer pop culture. A young person could turn on the TV and flip through the dial to find:
  • Star Trek
  • Mission: Impossible
  • Batman
  • The Green Hornet
  • I Spy
  • The Avengers
  • The Wild, Wild West
  • And of course, The Monkees
Those shows would be the backbone of syndicated rerun packages for the next quarter century, and most would also be developed into at least one motion picture, and for the first three, entire franchises that continue to this day."

It was the kind of harmless comedy that just made you laugh and Davy always got the girl in the episode!   It was what we used to have before MTV and videos.  Again, it was silly but funny.  Our mom had a rule: Do your homework and you can watch "The Monkees".

This is "What am I doing hanging around"!  Mickey Dolenz is pretty funny in this episode.  I like his rope routine.

"Just a loud mouth Yankee I went down to Mexico.
I didn't have much time to spend, about a week or so.
There I lightly took advantage of a girl who loved me so.
But I found myself a-thinkin' when the time had come to go...
What am I doin' hangin' round?
I should be on that train and gone.
I should be ridin' on that train to San Antonio,
What am I doin' hangin' round?
She took me to the garden just for a little walk.
I didn't know much Spanish and there was no time for talk.
Then she told me that she loved me not with words but with a kiss.
And like a fool I kept on thinkin' of a train I could not miss...
Well it's been a year or so, and I want to go back again.
And if I get the money, well I'll ride the same old train.
But I guess your chances come but once and boy I sure missed mine.
And still I can't stop thinkin' when I hear some whistle cryin'...."
