Some Tuesday morning thoughts!

We woke up to some interesting news about Pres BO & his Dems base:

"A new poll by CNN and ORC International finds that 27 percent of Democrats would like to see their party nominate a candidate other than Barack Obama for president in 2012." (York)

We also heard that black leaders are not happy:

"“You can spend a lot of time trying to win over white independents, but if you don’t pay attention to your base, African-Americans, if you have not locked up your base yet, you’ve got a serious problem,” said CNN contributor Roland Martin." (Politico)

What does it mean for 2012?  My guess is that they will vote for Pres BO.  However, the key is turnout, the kind of exciting and fanatical turnout that got BO nominated and elected.

We are also very happy to hear that the GOP House wants to make some changes at the UN:

"House Republicans are planning to introduce today legislation that seeks to force major changes at the United Nations, using as leverage the U.S.’s 22 percent contribution to the world body’s operating budget." (Bloomberg)

This is long overdue.  The UN has turned into a joke.  It is a collection of corrupt despots who beat up on the US and Israel for their domestic politics.

The US-Mexico border war and its consequences!

We learned of the deadly shooting at a Monterrey "casino" last week.  (I use the word casino but I don't know for sure whether it is a gambling house or just another place of entertainment)

Naturally, the shooting has received a lot of coverage in the media south of the border.

Patrick Corcoran has copies of the front pages in Mexico!  The headlines makes reference to "terrosimo" and that's exactly the right word for something this horrific!

I'm glad to hear that journalists and headline writers are finally calling it "terrorismo".  What else do you call shooting into a "casino" and killing people at random?

We also understand from Patrick that arrests were made!

My biggest concern is that this attack will hurt the local economy and get more capital out of Mexico.

Who is going to go out at night if incidents like these happen in the heart of a major Mexican city?

Also, these attacks will continue to drive more and more people with money out of Mexico.

We recently saw a story out  of Houston that Mexicans are moving to The Woodlands to get away from the violence.  How many of these people can Mexico afford to lose?

We also learned in The NY Times that Mexican law enforcement is now operating inside the US and that US drones are flying over Mexico.

The article points out that it's a secret operation because of sensitivities in Mexico?

Sensitive about what?  What could you possibly be sensitive about after almost 40,000 people have been killed?

Pres BO blames everybody AND keeps dropping in the polls!

Salena Zito had an interesting observation:

"Obama took to pointing fingers when his poll numbers started to slip last fall.

So far, he has blamed the stagnant economy on ATMs, ditches, Slurpees, corporate-jet owners, the Tea Party, Republicans, Japan’s earthquake, the Arab Spring, the Arab Summer, George Bush, and “fat-cat” Wall Street something-or-others.

The kitchen sink may be next.

His numbers are tumbling in the critical battleground states of Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida, North Carolina and New Hampshire – states he must win in 2012.

RealClearPolitics crunched the numbers based on the electoral-college vote: Total from states giving Obama 51 percent or higher approval, 166; from states at 49 percent or lower, 320.

A presidential candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win."

Why isn't blaming everybody working for Pres BO?

First, he's been president for 31 months.

Second, he passed his own stimulus and promised major results.

Third, and most important, the voters want leadership not finger pointing.

It does not matter whether he did nor did not inherit a mess.  What matters today is that he has ideas to turn things around.

So far he does not have a clue and that's why "blaming Bush" does not work anymore!

Our "let me prove that I'm a leader" Pres BO is now "a meteorologist in chief!"

Our friends in the East Coast can sleep well today.

We just learned that Pres BO is in charge of the hurricane command center.

We also learned that the latest Gallup approval is 38%, or a new low for Pres BO.

According to our friends at Power Line, Pres BO ".....chaired a meeting at the National Response Coordination Center (NRCC) set up at the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) headquarters in Washington, which is marshaling federal and local hurricane-relief efforts."

Frankly, how silly can Pres BO be?  This is the silliest image I've seen since Michael Dukakis got into a tank to prove that he was commander-in-chief material!

We are very happy that Pres BO is concerned about Hurricane Irene.

At the same time, this is not a national security or military matter.

We have very capable people at the NRCC, FEMA and all of the other agencies responsible for natural disasters.

Unlike Katrina and Louisiana, we have very competent governors in NY, NJ, Virginia, North & South Carolina.  Unlike New Orleans in the fall of 2005, we have strong and capable mayors in NY City, Philadelphia, etc.

Frankly, have we reached a point where Pres BO thinks that he has to get involved in everything, from child obesity to plant emissions in Texas to running hurricane operations?

Wouldn't it be more productive to have Pres BO working on his "jobs" speech?

Or, perhaps, looking to stop regulations so that business people can operate without the weight of an unbearable government?

The left is in full freakout mode over Gov Perry!

Did you see that fellow walk by, scream and call it the end of the world?

It must be another liberal freaking out about Governor Perry of Teas running for president.

The media's reaction to Gov Perry is so hysterical that David Zurawik has noticed the contrast to then candidate BO in 2008:

"Let's also think back to 2008 and reflect on the way we covered candidate Obama, and ask ourselves if we are treating Perry the same way we treated the senator from Illinois.

Really, think about it -- and let's look in the mirror as we are doing so to see if we can hold our own gaze."

It's obvious that Gov Perry is seen as a threat by the left and all of the smart people of the media.

First, Gov Perry has executive experience....how about 11 years as the governor of Texas and its $ 1 trillion GDP?

Second, Gov Perry takes positions, does not do "hope and change" and tells you where he stands.

Third, Gov Perry has presided over "job creation" whereas Pres BO has seen "job losses".

Again, I repeat that Gov Perry is probably getting too much credit and Pres BO is getting too much blame.  However, no one said that politics was fair.  Just remember the way that Dems blamed everything on Bush!

Fourth, Gov Perry is actually very popular in the business community.  Why not?  Gov Perry actually understands that "businessmen" and "capitalists" are not enemies of the state who should be taxed to death.  On the contrary, Gov Perry believes that the state should get out of the way and let people make money and lots of it!

Get ready for the media to dig up every dirt on Perry.  They will send plane loads of reporters down here looking for that girl that he dumped, or that politician who has an ax to grind or whatever.

It won't work!

I'm not saying that Gov Perry will be the GOP nominee.  Nevertheless, the left, and The NY Times, are in full "destroy Perry" mode.

They told me that blacks would be very disappointed if I voted for McCain.....

Have you heard Congresswoman Maxime Waters?

She is an angry woman.  She is not mad at Pres Bush these days.  She is furious with Pres Obama!  She is really furious that Pres BO's "Made in Canada" bus did not stop in black areas during the recent bus tour!

For the record, Maxine Waters is a disgrace.  She is a radical who does not understand how jobs are created or why black communities are falling apart.

First, it has nothing to do with race anymore.  Black high school students have huge opportunities to go to college or pursue other ambitions.

Second, it has nothing to do with a lack of government spending.  We are spending more money on welfare and other services than ever.

So why is black America falling behind? I'd recommend that every black person in the US read Star Parker:

"It's up to the individual to embrace freedom and take on the personal responsibilities that go with it.

Maybe blacks will realize that they should blame Barack Obama.

Not because he is black, but because he is a liberal -- and because he has grown government to the point where the oxygen necessary for freedom and prosperity is being squeezed out of our nation."

Dear Pres BO: You need to "veto" Michelle's expensive and needless travel habits!

Add caption

Over the past year, Mrs Obama has traveled to Spain (i.e. a girls' trip), to Africa and a few others.

Just last week, Pres and Mrs BO took separate planes to their vacation spot.

What's wrong with all of that?  It costs a lot of money to protect The First Lady every time that she decides to fly here, there and everywhere.

I understand that we have to protect The First Lady.  I just don't know why she has to travel so much and so often:  Michelle Obama Spent 42 Days on Vacation this Past Year

Nile Gardiner from the UK has a few thoughts about our traveling First Lady:

"There does appear to be an unhealthy sense of entitlement on the part of the First Lady, which seems in poor taste at a time when 14 million Americans are out of work, the housing market is collapsing, and the United States is facing the strong possibility of a double-dip recession.

Perhaps Mrs Obama could take a few tips on austerity as well as humility from her British counterpart Samantha Cameron, who has just one assistant, in contrast to at least 17 personal staff for the First Lady, and doesn’t feel the need to travel en masse with an entourage at taxpayers’ expense.

The vast majority of Americans are making significant sacrifices at this time of economic turmoil, and tens of millions are struggling even to make ends meet.

It’s time for both the President and the First Lady to exercise a bit of fiscal responsibility, not least when they are spending other people’s hard-earned money."

It may be time for Pres BO to veto his wife's expensive travel habits!

Nice swim suit.....we can't say the same about the latest GDP figures!

Our friend Ed Morrissey updated us today on the sad state of the US economy.

Yes, the GDP is down again:

"Real gross domestic product — the output of goods and services produced by labor and property located in the United States — increased at an annual rate of 1.0 percent in the second quarter of 2011, (that is, from the first quarter to the second quarter), according to the “second” estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

In the first quarter, real GDP increased 0.4 percent."

It sounds to me like there are some dark clouds over the horizon!

Once again, we call for "growth oriented" policies.  Unfortunately, Pres BO has been killing the economy with misguided populism and attacks on those who create jobs and risk their capital.

What's the result of Pres BO's rhetoric?  Nobody is hiring on risking their capital!

We understand that Pres BO will be giving a big "jobs speech" after his vacation. Let's hope that it is a "growth" speech not another call for taxing the rich!

In the meantime, Pres BO's political nightmare just gets more and more scary!   I hope that they are keeping an eye on the sharks in the waters of New England!

It was really nice to have a little rain around here!

Our prayers were answered and we finally got some rain.  It was nice to stick my hand out of the window and feel all of those rain drops on my arm.

Rain....what a wonderful thing!  Rain was the missing ingredient in this summer of 2011.

We can enjoy a song about the rain.   It was nice to hear the rhythm of the rain earlier today.

This is "Rhythm of the rain" by The Cascades:

"Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain Telling me just what a fool I've been
I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain And let me be alone again

The only girl I care about has gone away Looking for a brand new start
But little does she know That when she left that day
Along with her she took my heart

Rain please tell me now does that seem fair
For her to steal my heart away when she don't care
I can't love another when my hearts somewhere far away

The only girl I care about has gone away Looking for a brand new start
But little does she know that when she left that day
Along with her she took my heart

Rain won't you tell her that I love her so
Please ask the sun to set her heart aglow
Rain in her heart and let the love we knew start to grow

Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain
Telling me just what a fool I've been
I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain
And let me be alone again

Oh, listen to the falling rain Pitter pater, pitter pater......"

Let's go marching: WE WANT BUSH'S DEFICITS!

As the world's turns, and Pres BO's budgets blow up red, we are left yearning for Pres Bush's deficits:

"In 31 months of Barack Obama’s presidency, according to the Treasury and CBS News, the US has added $4 trillion to its national debt.  That approaches the presidential record set by George W. Bush of $4.9 trillion, but there’s a catch to that.  Bush set that record in two terms — in 96 months....."  (EdM)

Yes, don't you love those days when Pres Bush ran a budget deficit of 2% of GDP?

It looks a lot better than 10% of GDP!

P.S. Let's remember candidate BO, or the guy who told millions what they wanted to hear:

Let's add Mr. Zuckerman to the growing list of disenchanted "yes we can screamers"!

In 2008, I was shocked to see smart people fall for candidate BO like a bunch of girls screaming at a Beatles' concert.

I can understand 14-year old girls going mad at Paul McCartney & The Beatles singing "All my loving".

It was a lot more difficult talking to Obama's voters because their support was rooted on a fascination or a personality cult.

I asked again and again:  What was this guy done?

The answer:  It does not matter.  He is Obama!

I asked: Are you concerned that he voted present 100 times as an Illinois state senator?

The answer: That's OK!  He is a thinker!

I asked: What about his lack of governing experience?

The answer: That's OK.  He is Obama and Obama does not need the kind of executive experience that most of our presidents have had!

He is unique!

He is a gift from above!

He will fix the world with a smile and a speech!

Today, Mortimer Zuckerman, a serious guy until he flipped for Obama in '08, has admitted that it was all too good to be true:

"Many voters who supported him are no longer elated by the historic novelty of his candidacy and presidency.

They hoped for a president who would be effective.

Remember "Yes We Can"? Now many of his sharpest critics are his former supporters.

Witness Bill Broyles, a one-time admirer who recently wrote in Newsweek that "Americans aren't inspired by well-meaning weakness."

The president who first inspired with great speeches on red and blue America now seems to lack the ability to communicate any sense of resolve for a program, or any realization of the urgency of what might befall us.

The teleprompter he almost always uses symbolizes and compounds his emotional distance from his audience."

We feel your pain!  We welcome you back to the side that predicted that Obama was just too good to be true!

P.S. Speaking of "mirage", we spoke about the Obama stimulus on Wednesday night:

An update on Pres BO's stimulus!

We spoke with Clayton Cramer about his new post on the 2009 stimulus:

"I mentioned last month that even by the White House's own probably optimistic definition of the number of jobs created by the stimulus bill, these jobs ended up costing the government (that is to say, the taxpayers now and for generations to come) at least $218,000 per job."

The stimulus that did not stimulate?

Frank Burke also joined us for a discussion of Clayton's article and a few other thoughts.

2012 will be about Perry's Texas (the job creator) vs Obama's Illinois (the job killer)

At this point, we don't really know who will be the GOP nominee.  My guess is that it will be Romney or Perry but that's only a guess in the summer of 2011.

Frankly, I am not even sure that Pres BO will be the Dem nominee.  In other words, I'm now 50-50 that he will seek reelection.

The political landscape is getting worse and worse for Pres BO and Dems know it!  (President Obama’s disengaged style has evoked bad memories for some liberals)

Let me say it again: Don't be surprised if the Dem nominee in 2012 is not Obama!

Nevertheless, we will debate big ideas in 2012:  Texas vs California or Texas vs Illinois!

Today, we learned that Illinois is a "jobs disaster":

"In a trend that continues to worsen, more Illinoisans found themselves unemployed in the month of July.

Illinois lost more jobs during the month of July than any other state in the nation, according to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report.

After losing 7,200 jobs in June, Illinois lost an additional 24,900 non-farm payroll jobs in July.

The report also said Illinois’s unemployment rate climbed to 9.5 percent. This marks the third consecutive month of increases in the unemployment rate.

Illinois started to create jobs as the national economy began to recover.

But just when Illinois’s economy seemed to be turning around, lawmakers passed record tax increases in January of this year.

Since then, Illinois’s employment numbers have done nothing but decline."

Make sure that you go back and read that tax increase line again!

It never fails:  The left raises taxes and job creators move to Texas!

What's all of this talk about a Texas "jobs miracle"?

Frankly, it is not a miracle.  Instead, it is the very logical consequence of policies that understand how jobs are created.

Again, it is not a miracle.  It is simple common sense.

If you punish job creators, such as Obama's Illinois or the left's paradise of California, then you will drive them away to Texas.

If you reward job creators, keep taxes low, have a serious regulatory environment, and control excessive litigation then you will create jobs.  Check out our Wednesday night commentary:

Pres Obama CAN NOT allow Qaddafi to travel to Venezuela or Cuba!

We fear that Chavez could offer Qaddafi asylum.

Pres Obama can not allow this.  We need to put some F-16s in the air and force the Caracas-bound plane to land in Guantanamo.  We need to have Navy ships on alert to stop any vessel that may be carrying him.

Again, Pres BO can not allow the Libyan madman to escape and mock justice in Chavez' Venezuela or Castro's Cuba.  We hope that Pres BO has made that "very clear" to Chavez or Castro!

Our wish is that Qaddafi does not leave Libya "alive".   We want a bullet between the eyes!  That's justice for me!

Our second wish is an arrest and a trial in GITMO.  He should be tried as a terrorist for the killing of US soldiers at a German disco in 1986 & the horrific murder of PAN AM 103!

P.S. Pres BO should watch this video and learn something about leadership.  Pres Reagan ordered this attack after the killing of US soldiers at the aforementioned night club in Germany:

A word about Libya & a few other thoughts!

According to news reports, Ghadaffi is down to his last few minutes.  At the same time, nobody knows where he is and his sons showed up after they were allegedly captured.

Let me repeat.  Qaddafi has American blood on his hands.  He killed US soldiers in Germany back in '86.  He also supported the horrific PAN AM 103 bombing that killed over 200 passengers, including many US citizens and college students flying home for the Christmas vacation.

In other words, Qaddafi is a criminal and should be taken out.

I did not support the Obama administration for two reasons:

1) Pres BO did not consult with Congress.  How do you start a conflict of this magnitude without going to Congress?  What was Pres BO thinking?

2) Pres BO did not use US air power months ago when it would have been very effective at breaking the back of Qaddafi's army.  Sen McCain is right about this!

Today, we must make sure that the weapons do not fall on the wrong hands.  We do not want Al Qaeda or others "walking out" of Libya with chemical bombs.

Beyond Libya, we got further info today about Pres BO's electoral weakness:

1) He is minus 24 in the latest Rasmussen "intensity" poll;

2) Gallup has his approval at 38%; and,

3) Romney leads Obama, 48-46%

We remind you that polls are polls and things can change.  In other words, things could improve or deteriorate for Pres BO.  No matter what, he continues to be at under 50% and that's always a problem with incumbents.

A word about Nick Ashford, a great songwriter who died today!

Nick Ashford, died today from cancer:

"As songwriting partners, Nick Ashford and his wife, Valerie Simpson, wrote chart-topping rhythm-and-blues hits for Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross, and then went on to become singing stars themselves in the 1970s and 1980s as Ashford & Simpson." (WashPost)

Let's remember Nick Ashford with one of his greatest songs.  This is Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell singing "Ain't no mountain high enough", one of the best pop tunes ever:

"Listen, baby Ain't no mountain high
Ain't no valley low Ain't no river wide enough, baby

If you need me, call me No matter where you are
No matter how far Just call my name
I'll be there in a hurry You don't have to worry

'Cause baby,
There ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you

Remember the day I set you free
I told you You could always count on me
From that day on I made a vow
I'll be there when you want me
Some way, some how

'Cause baby, There ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you

Oh no darling, no wind, no rain
No winters cold can stop me baby
No, no baby, 'cause you are my love
If you ever in trouble, I'll be there on the double
Just send for me, oh baby

My love is alive Way down in my heart
Although we are miles apart
If you ever need a helping hand
I'll be there on the double As fast as I can

Don't you know that
There ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you

Don't you know that
There ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough Ain't no river wide enough."

A word about the death of Jerry Leiber, great pop songwriter!

If you like Elvis' music then you will remember that Jerry Leiber was one of his chief songwriters.  He also wrote some of the biggest hits of the pop-rock era.

We learned that Leiber died yesterday:

"Jerry Leiber, one half of the songwriting duo behind rock classics such as "Hound Dog," "Yakety Yak" and "Stand by Me," died of cardiopulmonary failure Monday in Los Angeles. He was 78."

We remember Leiber's songs with this trip down "pop-memory-lane".  Let's hear Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock" & "Hound Dog", two of the all time greatest rock songs.

The third selection is "Stand by me" by Ben E. King, a song that hit the top of the pop and R&B charts.  Great song!

The last selection is "Love Potion #9", a hit in the late 1950's by The Clovers and later by The Searchers:

"The warden threw a party in the county jail
The prison band was there and they began to wail
The band was jumpin' and the joint began to swing
You should've heard those knocked out jailbirds sing

Let's rock Everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock

Spider Murphy played the tenor saxophone
Little Joe was blowin' on the slide trombone
The drummer boy from Illinois went crash, boom, bang
The whole rhythm section was a purple gang

Let's rock Everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock

Number 47 said to number 3
"You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see
I sure would be delighted with your company
Come on and do the Jailhouse Rock with me"

Let's rock Everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock, Rock, Rock

Sad Sack was sittin' on a block of stone
Way over in the corner weepin' all alone
The warden said, "Hey, buddy, don't you be no square
If you can't find a partner use a wooden chair"

Let's rock Everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock

Shifty Henry said to Bugs, "For Heaven's sake
No one's lookin', now's the chance to make a break"
Bugsy turned to Shifty and he said, "Nix nix
I wanna stick around a while and get my kicks"

Let's rock Everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock

Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock, dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock......"

You ain't nothin' but a hound dog Cryin' all the time
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog Cryin' all the time

You ain't nothin' but a hound dog Cryin' all the time
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog Cryin' all the time
Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit
You ain't no friend of mine"

"When the night has come And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No, I won't be afraid No, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darling, darling, stand by me
Oh, now, now, stand by me Stand by me, stand by me

If the sky that we look upon Should tumble and fall
Or the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry No, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darling, darling stand by me
Oh, stand by me, stand by me Stand by me, stand by me, yeah

Whenever you're in trouble Won't you stand by me?
Oh, now, now, stand by me
Oh, stand by me, stand by me, stand by me

Darling, darling, stand by me  Stand by me, oh, stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me......."

"I took my troubles down to Madame Ruth
You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth
She's got a pad down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
Sellin' little bottles of Love Potion Number Nine

I told her that I was a flop with chicks
I'd been this way since 1956
She looked at my palm and she made a magic sign
She said "What you need is Love Potion Number Nine"

She bent down and turned around and gave me a wink
She said "I'm gonna make it up right here in the sink"
It smelled like turpentine, it looked like India Ink*
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink

I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine

I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink

I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine
Love Potion Number Nine."
