Pearl Harbor is a great opportunity to chat with your Cuban parents & "abuelos" about that day!

We remember the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor.

Most Americans learned about it around 1pm ET since Hawaii is 6-7 hours on the other side of the West Coast.

I spoke to my father, and late uncle Jose, about Pearl Harbor a few years ago.

My father, and his two late brothers, were teens in Cuba on that day.

Like so many other "Jesuit School" boys growing up in Sagua La Grande, Cuba, they went to mass that Sunday and came home to eat Abuela Senda's lunch.

We've heard that her lunches were always delicious. They probably included some of that sea food that Abuelo Silvio used to buy at the fish market.

By the way, my father's family had lived in that small town since Francisco Canto moved there in 1840! The Canto family had deep roots in that little town.  My Uncle Jose who died in 2008 wrote about Francisco Canto.  Check it out!  He was quite a man!

They got the news of the attack on the radio.  It was one of those "breaking news" flashes that interrupted routine programming.

Cuba eventually declared war too.  In fact, Cuba became a target of U-2 Subs because of the supply line to the US.  Cuban ships were sunk!

Our parents and grandparents lived through WW2, too!  Again, ask your Cuban 'abuelos" about that day.  They will tell you a story or two!  You will enjoy it!  You will also learn a thing or two about your Cuban roots!

We would also recommend checking out Bill Katz' post about Pearl Harbor:

"Today Americans still retain their fear of a surprise attack.  But as Pearl Harbor fades into memory, and the media continues its 1960s-style skepticism of all things military, that fear is, to our peril, fading as well.  And yet the fear should today be greater than ever, for a nuclear Pearl Harbor would make the original attack look like a minor exercise.  Two well-placed nuclear devices sailed into American harbors and set off by suicide crews could kill more people in 20 seconds than in all the wars in American history put together.  And our economy would be wrecked.
That is the threat of a nuclear Iran.  Some disparage talk of such a threat.  These "experts" say the Iranians would never attempt such a venture, fearing retaliation.  They said that about Japan as well.  But countries don't always act rationally.  Sometimes they act ideologically, emotionally, especially when they think they are acting on behalf of their religious beliefs.  We have much to be concerned about, and, yes, to fear.  We also have resources to deal with the threat.  How we use those resources may well determine how future generations judge us."

The lesson of Pearl Harbor is that we must be strong and ready for war.  Nobody likes war but we must be ready to fight.

The second lesson is that our enemies will attacks us when they perceive that we are weak.

Weakness invites attacks!  Are you listening Pres "I need to be loved by everybody" Obama?
