Who can forget it? I was in Mexico City. I fell asleep early and did not hear or watch anything about John Lennon's death.
Most people in the US heard about the shooting during the Monday Night Football game. I remember turning off the TV in the 3rd quarter because it had been a long day and my body wanted sleep:
I learned about it around 6am the next morning when I woke up. It is still shocking 31 years later.
About a month before the shooting, John had returned to the pop charts with a great new album called "Double Fantasy". It was his first studio work in almost 5 years. It confirmed that John was ready to record a lot of great music.
John Lennon wrote and sang so many great songs. I've always loved "Norweigan Wood" from the Rubber Soul album. John does the lead vocals with Paul in the background PLUS George introduces the Indian sitar to pop music:
"I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me...
She showed me her room, isn't it good, norwegian wood?
She asked me to stay and she told me to sit anywhere,
So I looked around and I noticed there wasn't a chair.
I sat on a rug, biding my time, drinking her wine
We talked until two and then she said, "It's time for bed"
She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh.
I told her I didn't and crawled off to sleep in the bath
And when I awoke, I was alone, this bird had flown
So I lit a fire, isn't it good, norwegian wood....."
