We spent much of 2007-08 hearing that the world hated Bush. It was a talking point at the "yes we can" rallies.
It reminded some of us of what they used to say about Reagan, the last president that Europe used to call a "cowboy".
In the summer of '08, we saw adoring (actually irrational is a better adjective) German crowds treat candidate BO like a rock star or the American that so much of Europe had been yearning for.

That was then....this is now!
Walter Russell Mead has a great column about anti-Americanism in the Age of Obama:
"In almost every case, these leaders are winning public support at home by thumbing their noses at the US administration.
Schäuble gets credit for standing up to US pressure; Abbas has transformed himself (perhaps briefly) into a Palestinian hero for defying the US.
Erdogan, Putin, Wen Jiabao: whether democratically elected or not, they all stand to gain at home by resisting perceived US pressure and “standing up” for the home team against President Obama."
Anti-Americanism is back! Did it ever go away?
Much of the left, and some in "the media in the tank for BO", misunderstood the world's reaction to Pres Bush.
In fact, the world has always had a "love-hate" relationship with the US.
On one hand, they hate our military but enjoy the protection it provides Europe and much of the world.
After all, who protected Europe from all of those Soviet tanks on the other side of Germany? Was it French poets or US soldiers?
What Navy protects the world's sea lanes? Is it the Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee or US Navy ships?
Who protects Western cities from the threat of an Iranian missile today? Is it the anti-American European press or the US Mediterranean Fleet?
Last, but not least, who keeps "the oil to Europe" flowing through the Strait of Hormuz? Is it European "wishful thinking" or the aircraft carriers that Pres Reagan put there in the 1980s?

We are also seeing a reaction to Pres BO's weakness and lack of leadership.
Let's repeat it. The world hates a strong and decisive US president, such as Bush, Bush and Reagan. They hate them but sleep better at night knowing that such a president will protect the world from the bad guys.
Yes, they hated Bush. They hated Pres Bush because he was decisive.
Bush told a lot of Europeans what they didn't want to hear, from terrorism to the corruption at the UN that protected Saddam Husein. Who can forget The Oil for Food program that put millions in the pockets of corrupt leaders and very little food on the table of Iraqis?
Initially, they loved Pres BO because he told them what they wanted to hear.
They hate him today because he is weak and indecisive. He has also kept in place all of those Bush anti-terror policies that the Euro-left was so angry about.
Anti-Americanism is alive and well in Europe. Of course, they warned me about that if I voted for McCain!
