Have you noticed that there is suddenly a lot of interest in the 1980s? I saw a website full of memories and articles about the decade!
I got married in 1986. Our first two sons were born in the decade. I moved to Texas in the 80s.
The decade had a lot of political memories too, such as Pres Reagan and VP Bush winning 3 consecutive elections. It was not a good decade for Dems! Reagan and Bush won big.
As for music, I lost track of pop music a bit in the 1980s.
First, music changed and it did not sound as good as before. It was not as melodic as the music of the 1970s or 1960s.
Second, it took me a while to get into videos. I did eventually and grew to like music on places like VH-1. (I don't watch it anymore because I hate "hip hop" and object to the obscene messages passing as "song lyrics")
Click and listen. This is "Everybody wants to rule the world" by Tears for Fears.
I heard this song at the Galleria Mall when Beatriz and I were shopping. I got hooked on the melody and asked the sales clerk for the name of the song. I bought it soon after that:
"Welcome to your life There's no turning back
Even while we sleep
We will find you acting on your best behavior
Turn your back on Mother Nature
Everybody wants to rule the world
It's my own design It's my own remorse
Help me to decide Help me make the most
Of freedom and of pleasure Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world
There's a room where the light won't find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do I'll be right behind you
So glad we've almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world
I can't stand this indecision Married with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to rule the world
Say that you'll never never never never need it
One headline why believe it?
Everybody wants to rule the world
All for freedom and for pleasure Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world....."
The second song is Kim Carnes singing Smokey Robinson's "More Love". It was a hit very early in the decade, i.e. 1980. This is a wonderful version of the song.
I like Smokey Robinson's version a lot but Kim Carnes is better looking. Kim's good looks is the tie breaker:
"Let it be soon don't hesitate Make love don't wait
Open your heart and let my love come in
I want the moment to start When I can fill your heart with
More love and more joy Than age or time could ever destroy
Oh honey now my love will be so sound
It'll take a hundred life times To live it down
Wear it down Tear it down
This is no fiction this is no act This is real it's a fact
I'll always belong only to you Each day I'll be living to
Make sure I'm giving you
More love and more joy Than age or time could ever destroy
Oh honey now my love will be so sound
It'll take a hundred life times To live it down
Wear it down Tear it down
As we grow older no need to fear
When you need me I'll be here
I'll be beside you every step of the way
A heart that's truthful And keeping you youthful with
More love and more joy Than age or time could ever destroy
Oh honey now my love will be so sound
It'll take a hundred life times To live it down
Wear it down Tear it down
Gonna give you more love more joy than age or time could ever destroy......"
