For the most part, Pres BO has continued the Bush-McCain approach in Iraq. In fact, Pres BO has angered his base by following that approach.
In recent days, we've read press reports that the Obama administration wants to keep only 3,000 troops in Iraq after the Bush agreement expires at the end of 2011.
We've also heard that the military is not happy with such a small force. We hear that the military officers are calling for 10,000, or a force that can defend US interests and react quickly to any Iranian encroachment.
Today, Senators McCain, Lieberman and Graham published a letter calling on Pres BO to do the responsible thing rather than make a decision to offset all of the grief that he is getting from the Dem left wing.
This is what they wrote:
"For the sake of our current and future national security, we ask the president to again heed the advice of our commanders and others with experience in Iraq and reject proposals for a radically smaller troop presence there, which risks being a very serious foreign policy and national security mistake for our country."
As the letter indicates, there is support in Iraq for keeping US troops. I think that most Iraqi leaders understand the risk of not having enough US troops to deter Iranian aggression.
We've applauded Pres BO for hanging tough in Iraq, Afghanistan and continuing the Bush anti-terror policies. We understand that such an approach has created a lot of anger among those who voted for "change".
Let's hope that we finish our mission in Iraq correctly. We owe it to the 4,400 dead and every soldier who served in that war.Check out our Saturday night commentary:
