We wish Barry Gibb a very happy 65th birthday.
Barry, along with his twin brothers Maurice & Robin, recorded and wrote some of the greatest songs of the last 50 years.
The Bee Gees had hits in the 1960's, 1970's, 1980's and 1990's. They started the new century with a Top 10 album but it all ended when Maurice died in 2003.
Today, we remember a very young Barry from many years ago.
The first video is "Spicks and Specks", their huge 1966 hit in Australia that brought them international attention. It set up the trip to London in 1967 and their first run of international hits. Check out the girl dancers! Check out those sunglasses & that "Sonny Bono look" on Maurice!
The second video is a 1960 TV appearance when was Barry was 14 and his twin brothers were 11:
"Where is the sun That shone on my head
The sun in my life It is dead it is dead
Where is the light That would play In my streets
And where are the friends I could meet I could meet
Where are the girls I left far behind
The spicks and the specks Of the girls on my mind
Where is the sun That shone on my head
The sun in my life It is dead it is dead
Where are the girls I left far behind
The spicks and the specks Of the girls on my mind
Where is the girl I loved all along
The girl that I loved she's gone she's gone
All of my life I call yesterday The spicks and the specks
of my life 've gone away All of my life I call yesterday
The spicks and the specksof my life 've gone away...."
By 1968, Barry & the brothers were big international stars. They recorded and wrote wonderful songs like "Words":
"Smile an everlasting smile, a smile can bring you
near to me.
Don't ever let me find you gone,
near to me.
Don't ever let me find you gone,
cause that would bring a tear to me.
This world has lost its glory, let's start a brand
new story now, my love.
Right now, there'll be no other time and I can show
you how, my love.
Talk in everlasting words, and dedicate them all to me.
And I will give you all my life, I'm here if you should call to me.
You think that I don't even mean a single word I say.
It's only words, and words are all I have, to take
your heart away."
One of my favorite Barry Gibb lead vocals was "To Love somebody", their second international hit. It is still a very popular song on the radio:
"There's a light A certain kind of light
That never shone on me
I want my life to be lived with you Lived with you
There's a way everybody say
To do each and every little thing
But what does it bring If I ain't got you, ain't got...
You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody To love somebody
The way I love you
In my brain I see your face again
I know my frame of mind
You ain't got to be so blind
And I'm blind, so, so, so very blind
I'm a man, can't you see
What I am I live and I breathe for you
But what good does it do
If I ain't got you...."
