If you like Elvis' music then you will remember that Jerry Leiber was one of his chief songwriters. He also wrote some of the biggest hits of the pop-rock era.
We learned that Leiber died yesterday:
"Jerry Leiber, one half of the songwriting duo behind rock classics such as "Hound Dog," "Yakety Yak" and "Stand by Me," died of cardiopulmonary failure Monday in Los Angeles. He was 78."
We remember Leiber's songs with this trip down "pop-memory-lane". Let's hear Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock" & "Hound Dog", two of the all time greatest rock songs.
The third selection is "Stand by me" by Ben E. King, a song that hit the top of the pop and R&B charts. Great song!
The last selection is "Love Potion #9", a hit in the late 1950's by The Clovers and later by The Searchers:
"The warden threw a party in the county jail
The prison band was there and they began to wail
The band was jumpin' and the joint began to swing
You should've heard those knocked out jailbirds sing
Let's rock Everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Spider Murphy played the tenor saxophone
Little Joe was blowin' on the slide trombone
The drummer boy from Illinois went crash, boom, bang
The whole rhythm section was a purple gang
Let's rock Everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Number 47 said to number 3
"You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see
I sure would be delighted with your company
Come on and do the Jailhouse Rock with me"
Let's rock Everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock, Rock, Rock
Sad Sack was sittin' on a block of stone
Way over in the corner weepin' all alone
The warden said, "Hey, buddy, don't you be no square
If you can't find a partner use a wooden chair"
Let's rock Everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Shifty Henry said to Bugs, "For Heaven's sake
No one's lookin', now's the chance to make a break"
Bugsy turned to Shifty and he said, "Nix nix
I wanna stick around a while and get my kicks"
Let's rock Everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock, dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock......"
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog Cryin' all the time
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog Cryin' all the time
Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit
And you ain't no friend of mine
Well they said you was high-classed
Well, that was just a lie
Yeah they said you was high-classed
Well, that was just a lie
Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit
And you ain't no friend of mine
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog Cryin' all the time
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog Cryin' all the time
Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit
And you ain't no friend of mine
Well they said you was high-classed
Well, that was just a lie
Yeah they said you was high-classed
Well, that was just a lie
Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit
And you ain't no friend of mine
Well they said you was high-classed
Well, that was just a lie
Ya know they said you was high-classed
Well, that was just a lie
Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit
And you ain't no friend of mine
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog Cryin' all the time
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog Cryin' all the time
Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit
You ain't no friend of mine"
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No, I won't be afraid No, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
And darling, darling, stand by me
Oh, now, now, stand by me Stand by me, stand by me
If the sky that we look upon Should tumble and fall
Or the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry No, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
And darling, darling stand by me
Oh, stand by me, stand by me Stand by me, stand by me, yeah
Whenever you're in trouble Won't you stand by me?
Oh, now, now, stand by me
Oh, stand by me, stand by me, stand by me
Darling, darling, stand by me Stand by me, oh, stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me......."
"I took my troubles down to Madame Ruth
You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth
She's got a pad down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
Sellin' little bottles of Love Potion Number Nine
I told her that I was a flop with chicks
I'd been this way since 1956
She looked at my palm and she made a magic sign
She said "What you need is Love Potion Number Nine"
She bent down and turned around and gave me a wink
She said "I'm gonna make it up right here in the sink"
It smelled like turpentine, it looked like India Ink*
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink
I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink
I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine
Love Potion Number Nine."
