On the day that the stock market took a 400 point dive, or about 4% of its value, our First Lady took a special plane to the family vacation in Martha's Vineyards. This is from WHD:
"Michelle Obama Thursday traveled separately from President Obama to Martha’s Vineyard, costing taxpayers thousands in additional expenses to get her a few hours of extra vacation time.
Mrs. Obama and her daughters arrived just before 2 pm Thursday on a U.S. government jet, according to the Martha’s Vineyard Times, which got its information from the local airport. The first lady’s office has been silent on her travel. President Obama arrived in the evening along with the family dog Bo.
The extra costs related to Mrs. Obama’s solo trip mainly include the flight on a specially designed military aircraft she took instead of Air Force One, as well as any extra staff and Secret Service that had to be enlisted to go with her. She would also have had her own motorcade from the airport to her vacation residence.
Mrs. Obama’s separate jet travel sends the wrong message on a host of issues, from global warming to the budget deficit to the economy – in which currently so many people can’t afford to take a vacation at all.
This is not the first time Michelle has gone on vacation ahead of the president on the taxpayers’ tab. Last December, she racked up what was likely more than $100,000 in expenses leaving early for their Hawaii vacation."
Frankly, I don't care that the Obama family is taking a vacation in mid-August. However, do they have to go to an exclusive resort at at time when we have 9% unemployment and the stock market is in trouble?
Secondly, can't Pres BO tell Mrs BO to stop traveling and spending so much money? Do we need a First Lady going to Spain, Africa and flying separately to the summer vacation? Do we need a big 747 carrying Pres BO and the family dog and another jet taking Mrs BO & the girls?
Does anyone in this White House read polling data or understand how much trouble Pres BO is in? I guess not or they don't care!
Peggy Noonan has a good column today:
"The market is dispirited. I'm wondering if the president is, too, and if that won't carry implications for the 2012 race.
You can imagine him having lunch with political advisers, hearing some unwanted advice—"Don't go to Martha's Vineyard!"—putting his napkin by his plate, pushing back from the table, rising, and saying in a clipped, well-modulated voice: "I'm tired. I'm going. If they want this job so much let them have it.""
Yes, I think that Miss Noonan is right!
