Memory Lane: A couple of ABBA songs!

It took a while for ABBA to take off in the US but they really did in the spring and summer of 1976.

I love the ABBA sound because of great harmonies and catchy tunes.  In other words, I was an ABBA fan before the movie "Mamma Mia" came out a couple of years ago.

I really loved Frida and Agnetha, the best looking "singing girls" of the 1970's.  (I know that there were two guys in the group but who cares about them?)

In early '76, ABBA released "Fernando", a song about a Rio Grande freedom fighter but it's not clear what side he was fighting for. I gave up interpreting the song and just focused on the two beautiful girls singing!

Later, they gave us "Dancing Queen", a perfect song for the disco era of the late 1970's.

By the way, this "Dancing Queen video" was never shown in the US.  They performed before the Royal Family in their native Sweden.  I think that Frida and Agnetha looked really sharp with those outfits!

I love their songs and specially those cute girls that sang them:

"Can you hear the drums Fernando?
I remember long ago another starry night like this
In the firelight Fernando
You were humming to yourself and softly strumming your guitar
I could hear the distant drums
And sounds of bugle calls were coming from afar
They were closer now Fernando
Every hour every minute seemed to last eternally
I was so afraid Fernando
We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die
And I'm not ashamed to say
The roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me For liberty, Fernando
Though we never thought that we could lose There's no regret
If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando
Now we're old and grey Fernando
And since many years I haven't seen a rifle in your hand
Can you hear the drums Fernando?
Do you still recall the fateful night we crossed the Rio Grande?
I can see it in your eyes
How proud you were to fight for freedom in this land
There was something in the air that night The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though we never thought that we could lose There's no regret
If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando
There was something in the air that night The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me For liberty, Fernando
Though we never thought that we could lose
There's no regret If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando Yes, if I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando...

"You can dance, you can jive Having the time of your life
Ooh see that girl, watch that scene Dig in the dancing queen
Friday night and the lights are low Looking out for a place to go
Where they play the right music, getting in the swing
You come in to look for a king
Anybody could be that guy Night is young and the music's high
With a bit of rock music, everything is fine
You're in the mood for a dance And when you get the chance
You are the dancing queen Young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing queen, feel the beat From the tambourine, oh yeah
You can dance, you can jive Having the time of your life
Ooh see that girl, watch that scene Dig in the dancing queen
You're a teaser, you turn 'em on
Leave 'em burning and then you're gone
Looking out for another, anyone will do
You're in the mood for a dance And when you get the chance
You are the dancing queen Young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing queen, feel the beat From the tambourine, oh yeah
You can dance, you can jive Having the time of your life
Ooh see that girl, watch that scene
Dig in the dancing queen Dig in the dancing queen......"
