In 2008, Hispanics voted for Pres BO in big numbers. It was "si se puede" for so many Hispanics, specially Mexican or Mexican Americans. (I should add that Obama did not as well with Cubans like me, Colombians or other Latino groups in the US)
Our friend, and show guest, Israel Ortega has written a great article about Hispanics and bad economic news:
"Here’s what you won’t hear from the President this weekend when he addresses the largest Latino advocacy organization’s annual conference:
- Latino unemployment is in double digits following a failed stimulus bill.
- Nearly one out of every two Latinos will fail to receive a high school diploma, despite the federal government’s control over education policy in the past 50 years.
- Unfettered government spending has led the national deficit to balloon to nearly $13 trillion, jeopardizing American economic security and quality of life."
Worse than that, don't expect the "in the tank for Obama" National Council of La Raza to bring it up.
Pres BO will engage in more "coqueteo" before La Raza and call for immigration reform. Of course, he won't tell the audience that his party failed to take up the issue when they had a majority.
Pres BO will pull the emotional strings and call for The Dream Act. Of course, he won't say that 6 Senate Dems killed the proposal last year.
Furthermore, he won't tell the audience that the Dem party refused to take up The Dream Act before the election. (Then-Speaker Pelosi did not want to force Dems to vote!)
Sadly, "Obama-mania" is alive and well in too many pockets of the Mexican American community.
We are happy to report that there are cracks in Obama-mania. There are clearly signs that Hispanics will be more skeptical and actually vote for people who can get things done rather than the guy who tells them what they want to hear!
We call on the GOP to present an alternative argument that is "solution oriented" rather than "emotion based":
1) Temp or Work visas for people who want to work in the US.
2) Let's remind Hispanics that we are the pro-life and the anti-abortion party.
3) We believe that marriage is between a man and a woman.
4) We believe that parents should choose schools not the teachers' unions that give money to the Dem party.
A few days ago, we spoke with George Rodriguez of The San Antonio Party.
George and I are optimistic that Hispanics are coming around and will vote for conservative candidates in bigger numbers in 2012:
