Hard to believe that manned space missions are over!

Where did the last 45 years go?

First, it was Gemini, then Apollo and then the shuttle missions.

Don't you recall waking up early to watch one of those big rockets take off?

I remember our teachers bringing those "rabbit ear antenna" TVs and watching the missions!   It was so exciting!

It was also patriotic!  The space program did so much to our national self-esteem!  It was absolutely exhilarating to watch US astronauts achieve such wonderful things!

What about that Sunday evening when Apollo 11 landed and the astronauts walked on the moon?   I recall that our family had dinner and then we watched Neil Armstrong going down those steps to walk on that moon!  It was the kind of moment that you will never forget!

What about the up and downs of Apollo 13?  or the first shuttle mission in 1981?

When will the US go back into space again?  I don't know!

Yes, we have budget issues but NASA is not the problem.

We have huge structural problems, such as Medicare & Social Security.

We need to reform our welfare state and leave NASA alone.

I will miss the missions.  I will miss the excitement of watching the landing or getting those reports from up above.

Wonder what Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, thinks of all of this?

P.S. I guess that we can always hear Frank Sinatra sing "Fly me to the moon" and memories of that Sunday night when we watched Neil Armstrong:

"Fly me to the moon Let me play there up with those stars
Let me see what spring is like On jupiter and mars
In other words, hold my hand
In other words, baby kiss me
Fill my heart with song Let me swing for ever more
You are all I long for All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, I love you...."
