A word about D-Day 1944

67 years ago, US, UK, Canadian and other allied troops landed at different points on the French coast to begin the liberation of Europe.

It's hard to imagine just how difficult it was to take the cliffs and shut down the German firepower.

You can watch "The Longest Day" or "Saving Private Ryan" and get a visual of the hard work and casualties of that morning.

Or you can talk to a D-Day veteran.  We have one in our church!

Or you can watch a documentary, such as the one that I saw over Memorial Day about all of the US soldiers buried in different places in France!

Or you can talk to some of the people who live in those French towns liberated by US troops!  I also saw a documentary about little French children greeting D-Day veterans last year.

Or you can read: The ordeal of Omaha Beach

Our world today was shaped by D-Day.   We salute the incredible heroism of US, UK, Canadian and other allies who hit the beach, took the bullets and gave a lot of people a better future.

This is Pres Reagan speaking on the 40th anniversary of D-Day.  He speaks about the veterans and the daughter who promised her father that she'd attend the ceremony:
