Wednesday morning thoughts!
Let's look at a few issues on the front pages.
Let's start with the GOP field.
Yesterday, Gov Huntsman of Utah, and Ambassador to China, announced that he is running. I don't think that he will create a lot of excitement. However, this is a very talented man with very unique experience. Wouldn't it be nice to have a president who understands China or Asia?
I think that Huntsman could be a great Secretary of State or Commerce in a GOP administration. Again, we need someone who understands China and our expanding relationship with that country.
Second, it looks like Pres BO will tell us about Afghanistan tonight. I will wait to hear Pres BO's speech but it looks that he will call for a modest withdrawal of troops. We will talk to Richard Baehr on Thursday and comment a bit more.
My position is that we should listen to the military and specially Gen Petraeus. I am not crazy about having 100,000 troops in Afghanistan, specially with very little combat support from the other NATO allies.
Nevertheless, we can not get out too early because we will have to come back.
Third, Libya continues to be a mess, a self-inflicted wound for Pres BO.
As we posted months ago, I supported a military mission to save Libyans from Qaddafi's troops.
However, Pres BO should have gone to the people and the US Congress for a resolution. What is all of this garbage about fighting a war under a UN resolution?
Fourth, we hear that Major League Baseball is considering a realignment of teams for the 2012 season.
I guess that it depends what they mean by realignment.
I am OK with moving Houston to the AL West and creating a regional rivalry between the Rangers and the Astros.
I am OK with adding a second wild card team as long as the season is not extended any further into November. I don't think that we should playing baseball around election day.
I am not OK with two 15-team leagues. I think that the divisional races create excitement and make September a lot of fun for the fans.
