We need an expanded version of The Merida Plan to help Central America!

The good news is that the Mexican military has hit the cartels hard.  We just learned of even more arrests today.

The bad news is that the cartels are very flexible and found Guatemala as a potential base of future operations.

More bad news:  The Central American nations can not really defend themselves against well organized bands with the latest weapons that money can buy.

What does this mean for the US?  It means that we will have to expand our operations and turn The Merida Plan into something of a regional effort.

We hope that someone is talking to Pres BO about the new threat to Mexico and Central America: Mexico's southern border awash in crime and violence

Let's check some of the article's key points:

"Guatemala's president, Alvaro Colom, is voicing alarm.

"They are invading us," Colom told El Pais, a Madrid daily newspaper, in an interview last week. " And either the countries of Central America join together to fight them or they will defeat us and finish off our democracies."

Worse yet, there's evidence that Los Zetas are using the lack of security on the border to smuggle north deserters from a feared Guatemalan army unit known as the Kaibiles to serve as ground troops and enforcers in Mexico's bloody drug conflict."

The war has gone to Central America and they are even less capable of defending themselves than Mexico is.  They just don't have the resources and we need to step in if necessary.  We need a larger and expanded version of The Merida Plan!
