We understand that Afghanistan is very hard. However, did we need to hear a campaign speech aimed at energizing Pres BO's disillusioned base?
First of all, we've made gains in Afghanistan. We hear that military leaders are worried that we may be pulling out before these gains are consolidated. (Our friend Bill Katz reported that today on his blog)
Second, we have a lot of hard fighting ahead. Again, will we have enough troops now that the other side knows that we are leaving?
Why are we telling the enemy, and specially the people on the ground, that we are planning to leave rather than win?
Third, who are these international partners in Afghanistan that Pres BO keeps 'boasting" about? Where are the NATO combat troops? Who else is fighting besides the US, UK and Canada?
Pres BO mentioned Iraq last night. He forgot to mention that we ended the Iraq War because Pres Bush had the guts to "surge" and defeat the enemy. Also, the Iraqi people started giving us "tips" once they understood that Pres Bush would not "cut and run".
Will that happen in Afghanistan? Time will tell. However, you can't win by withdrawing early.
Also, it's true that the public is war weary. However, they will be a lot more "war weary" if we have to go back and finish what Pres BO did not have the political courage to do.
