Peru....what's next?

We've been very busy up here with our own economic and other problems.  However, it's important to keep an eye on the world.

Yesterday, the left won in Peru:

"Official results, with 87 percent of the vote counted, had Humala ahead with 51.2 percent but officials cautioned that rural districts where Humala fared better were slow in reporting." (FoxNews)

Humala's victory happened for two  reasons:

1) Keiko Fuyimori was a very weak opponent.  With all due respect to Keiko Fuyimori, was running such a weak candidate the best that the center-right in Peru could do?

2) Humala promised everybody everything.  He did a Peruvian version of "hope and change".

The bad news is that foreign investors will be very cautious about Peru.

The good news is hat Humala does not have congressional majorities.   Also, he did not exactly get a 'mandate" with 51% of the vote!

Last, but not least, we have two other questions:

What was Mario Vargas Llosa thinking when he endorsed Humala?  Does he really think that you can reform a committed leftist?

What was Hugo Chavez' role in this campaign?  How much money came from Caracas?

A few days ago, we reported that Spain voted for reform.

It is very sad to see that Peru voted for the past, the kind of "class-warfare" and  "class envy" that have sent milions of Latin Americans overseas seeking a better life.
