On Thursday night, I spoke to the Rotary Club of Plano about immigration reform.
I shared some ideas about fixing the problem.
I call it finding solutions rather just pandering to the extremes.
My proposal has 3 parts.
It is not "comprehensive reform" but it is instead a "sensible fix" to a mess that isn't going away on its own.
First, let's start with a simple reality.
We can't move the ball forward until the US public is convinced that the US is serious about protecting the US-Mexico border from people who carry AK-47s and terrorize citizens on both sides.
This is Pres BO's biggest problem.
He won't protect the border but rather spends his time pandering to the left with attacks on the Arizona immigration law.
What is Arizona guilty of? Arizona has been forced to act because the federal government doesn't. What would you do?
Second, how do you deal with 10-12 million people who are here illegally or without papers?
You don't fix the problem by "hope and change" speeches or "si se puede" statements that make no sense. We've heard many of these speeches from Pres BO on "Cinco de Mayo" rallies or most recently in El Paso.
You fix the problem by borrowing a page from Utah, the most recent state to tackle the illegal immigration mess.
Utah adopted a strict enforcement of immigration law and offered people who are here the opportunity to apply for "guest worker visas".
Utah has the right idea. Enforce the law and encourage people to work here legally.
Last, but not least, you can not fix the illegal immigration problem until Mexico addresses its problems and reforms its economy.
We can not tell Mexico what to do. Neertheless, Mexico needs to reform its energy and agricultural sectors.
If it does then investment will flow into Mexico and Mexicans will find prosperity at home. If it does not then we will continue to see Mexicans searching for a better life in the US.
Here is the good news: We love to see Mexicans, or others, come here to purchase, invest, visit our museums, and so on. We love the fact that they are coming here to spend money and help our economy.
Here is the bad news: We can not offer employment to every Mexican who can't find a future in Mexico.
At some point, Mexico needs to take ownership of its problems and fix them. The Mexican political class needs to focus on Mexico rather than complain about our immigration laws.
I'm not saying that this is easy or simple. However, my solution understands our economy, shows humanity to people who are looking for a better life and develops a stronger economic relationship with Mexico.
Speaking of immigration reform, I spoke about it with Adryana Boyne on Thursday:
