Pres BO's speech is the political equivalent of the cleanup hitter taking strike three and leaving the bases loaded.
The Dallas Morning News, one of the most thoughtful newspapers on the topic of immigration reform, spoke for millions of Texas who can't figure out what Pres BO said in El Paso:
"It’s against that backdrop that this newspaper greeted President Barack Obama’s speech Tuesday in El Paso with a big dose of skepticism.
The words sounded right, but we’ve heard this before from him, particularly when he was currying the Hispanic vote during his 2008 campaign.
It’s now 2011, with his re-election campaign looming, and suddenly comprehensive immigration reform is a front-burner issue again.
Mere coincidence?" (DallasNews)
Ruben Navarette, a Hispanic columnist, sees it as pure show.
Even The NY Times wants something more than a speech:
"To move things forward, Mr. Obama will have to do a lot more. He needs to outline legislation, push Congressional leaders — including those in his own party — to back it and make the case repeatedly to Americans." (NYTimes)
So The NY Times wants leadership....The Dallas Morning News wants follow up not just another speech.....and Ruben Navarette is as skeptical as I am.
We say it again: Pres BO wasted a great opportunity to push immigration reform forward.
P.S. Don't blame me: I voted for McCain!
