Like Pres BO, PM Rod-Zap of Spain told everyone what they wanted to hear BUT reality always has the last word

Rod-Zap of Spain has a lot in common with Pres BO, according to Richard Fernandez:

"He came to power by blaming his predecessor for sending troops to Iraq.

The new leader promised comprehensive health care reform and to bring his country’s welfare safety net in line with Western Europe’s.

But the global financial crisis came and denied him his chance of greatness.

Compelled by circumstances, he began to belatedly imitate the policies of his predecessor simply in order to survive."

Of course, we remember the Socialist victory of March '04.

They were down in the polls but turned the terrible train explosions into a political opportunity to blame everything on PM Aznar's courageous decision to stand with Pres Bush and PM Blair over Iraq.
It worked: Rod-Zap became PM Rod-Zap.

It is not working anymore because socialism has failed in Spain as it has everywhere else.

Soern Kern has a great post about the current political troubles in Spain and why no one cheering over at the socialist corner.  It looks more and more like the Socialists will lose and lose big:

"A massive wave of social unrest in cities across Spain, dubbed the Spanish Revolution, reflects the failure of the social welfare state model to provide Spanish youth with a future, much less a present."

We posted in 2004 that PM Rod-Zap was one of the most irresponsible leaders in Europe.  He exploited the March 11 tragedy to win an election.

Let's hope that the Spanish people wise up and vote with their heads this time.  However, it will take time some time to reverse the unsustainable promises of the welfare state.
