First, Israel is not happy with the call for returning to the 1967 borders.
Of course, this is a huge national security problem, specially if Israel concludes that they must protect themselves from Iran.
Back here, Pres BO's speech is also an electoral risk in states like Florida with large Jewish-American populations.
Second, Pres BO is going to have a hard time explaining his newfound appreciation for democracy in Iraq.
Pres BO is now making the same point that Pres Bush made relative to establishing a democracy in Iraq.
In other words, Obama sounds a lot of Bush! This is not going to make "the yes we can" screamers very happy!
Charles Krauthammer has a good analysis of the speech. This is what he wrote about Iraq:
"How far did this concession to Bush go?
Note Obama's example of the democratization we're aiming for.
He actually said:
"In Iraq, we see the promise of a multiethnic, multisectarian democracy. There, the Iraqi people have rejected the perils of political violence for a democratic process ... Iraq is poised to play a key role in the region."
Hail the Bush-Obama doctrine."
Yes, hail the Bush-Obama doctrine in Iraq.
Translation: Reality has hit Pres BO between the eyes again!
P.S. We spoke about Pres BO's speech with Patrick McIlheran from The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel on Friday:
