70 years ago and still the most incredible baseball record ever!

Joe DiMaggio started his 56-game hitting streak 70 years ago today:

"One of the most famous records in American sports began on this day 70 years ago. Joe DiMaggio hit a measly single against the White Sox in a 13-1 Yankees loss. He would go on to hit in another 55 straight games." (PinstripeAlley)

How remarkable is DiMaggio's streak?

First, no one has come close!  Pete Rose got to 44 in 1978.   Paul Molitor got to 39.   A few years ago, Jimmy Rollins got over 35!  Ether of the LA Dodgers got to 30 last week.

Second, he didn't just hit safely in 56 games but he hit for a .408 average!

Unbelievable is not enough!

I'd say that DiMaggio's 56 game-hitting streak and Nolan Ryan's 7 no-hitters will never be surpassed.
