We were very happy when Carlos Pascual was named US Ambassador to Mexico.
First, Mr. Pascual is an experienced diplomat. He is exactly the kind of man that we should be sending to an important post like Mexico. His diplomatic resume is impressive!
Second, it demonstrated that the Obama administration was serious about choosing a qualified person to represent the US in Mexico.
So why is Ambassador Pascual leaving Mexico?
Can you say Wikileaks?
Unfortunately, Amb Pascual's words were leaked in the Wikileaks scandal. He expressed some concerns about police corruption and the Mexican Army's readiness.
To be fair, Amb Pascual's words were not meant to be made public. He was doing his job and speaking "frankly" to his State Department superiors.
I understand that Pres Calderon did not like Amb Pascual's comments about the Mexican military.
However, does anyone dispute the accuracy of Amb Pascual's remarks? More importantly, didn't Amb Pascual fight on Mexico's behalf to release the Merida Plan funds tied up by the Dem majority in the last Congress? Didn't Mexico understand that they had a "friend" in Amb Pascual?
Last, but not least, what message is Pres BO sending to other diplomats?
Furthermore, why hasn't Pres BO done more to go after the people responsible for the "leaks"?
Amb Pascual is a very good man. He is the victim of Wikileaks and a very weak US president who is clearly "in over his head".
