Dear Pres Calderon: You need to check your sources about guns going south!

We like Pres Calderon of Mexico.

We defended Calderon in 2006 when candidate Lopez-Obrador hysterically attacked Mexico's elections.

We have supported Pres Calderon's courageous stand against the cartels.

We defended the Calderon administration against delays in funding The Merida Plan.

We are very happy to see that new Republican majority wants to expedite the plan negotiated by Pres Bush a few years ago.  ("Republicans are using their new clout in Congress to investigate the delay in sending U.S. military hardware and training programs to Mexico that were called for by the 3-year-old, $1.4 billion Mérida Initiative." )

At the same time, we do not like Pres Calderon promoting the "myth" that 90% of the guns are coming from the US.

Stratfor is a respected global intelligence firm.  They just published a new study:  Mexico's Gun Supply and the 90 Percent Myth

The study looks at the kinds of guns being used in Mexico:

"In recent years the cartels, especially their enforcer groups such as Los Zetas, Gente Nueva and La Linea, have been increasingly using military weaponry instead of sporting arms."

In other words, you can't buy these weapons in our gun stores.

Mexico is awash with lethal weapons.  Some are indeed coming from the US but the majority come from black market brokers who are happy to take the cartel's money.

What's going on?  Why has Pres Calderon been repeating this nonsense?

My guess is that Pres Calderon does not want to admit the truth:

1) Mexico's army is the source of many of these weapons.

2) Mexico does not want to admit that guns are entering the country through Guatemala, the coastlines and other means.

How can the US and Mexico work together to prevent the guns from entering Mexico?

Mexico could call on the US to seal the border.

We should work together to stop illegal traffic, whether it's human smuggling or guns.

Otherwise, both sides will continue to blame each other and the cartels will just get more and more dangerous.
