Elvis Presley would have been 76 this month!

Elvis Presley died in 1977.  He would have been 76 this month.

Without question, Elvis Presley was the most successful US recording star of the 20th century.

He started out selling 45s, then LPs, then cassettes, then CDs and now you can watch on DVDs.

Elvis' career can be divided into several chapters.

First, the early rocker days, i.e. "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock".  This is my favorite chapter.

Second, the early 1960s or the silly movies period.  Frankly, I don't care too much for that.

Third, the great comeback of 1969 when he became the # 1 attraction in Las Vegas.  He recorded some big hits and put on amazing concerts.

Fourth, and finally, the post-death exploitation and I can do without that.

The bottom line is that Elvis has no equal.  He put rock music on the radio and opened the door for everything that followed.

Click to hear "Such a night" from the 1960 "Elvis is back" LP.  The album title is a reference to the fact that Elvis was back from military service.

The second video is Mickey Newbury's "American Trilogy", a popular song from the concerts in the early 1970s:

"It was a night oo-oo what a night
It was it really was such a night
The moon was bright oh how so bright
It was it really was such a night
The night was a light with stars above
Oo-oo when she kissed me
I had to fall in love

Oh it was a kiss oo-oo what a kiss
It was it really was such a kiss
Oh how she could kiss oh what a kiss
It was it really was such a kiss
Just the thought of her lips
Sets me afire
I reminisce and I’m filled with desire

But I’d gave my heart to her in sweet surrender
How well I remember, I’ll always remember

Oh, what a night oo-oo what a night
It was it really was such a night
Came the dawn and my heart and her love
And the night was gone
But I’ll never forget the kiss
The kiss in the moonlight
Oo-oo such a kiss, such a night

It was a night oo-oo what a night
It was it really was such a night
Came the dawn and my heart and her love
And the night was gone
But I’ll never forget the kiss
The kiss in the moonlight
How well I remember, I’ll always remember

That night oo-oo what a night
It was it really was such a night
When we kissed I had to fall in love

But I’d gave my heart to her in sweet surrender
How well I remember, I’ll always remember

Oh that night oo-oo what a night
It was it really was such a night
When we kissed I had to fall in love
Well she's gone, gone, gone
Yes she's gone, gone, gone
Came the dawn, dawn, dawn
And my love was gone
But before that dawn
Yes before that dawn and before that dawn
Oo-oo, oo-oo, oo-oo, oo-oo, oo-oo
Such a night....."

"Oh I wish I was in the land of cotton
Old things they are not forgotten
Look away, look away, look away Dixieland
Oh I wish I was in Dixie, away, away
In Dixieland I take my stand to live and die in Dixie
Cause Dixieland, that's where I was born
Early Lord one frosty morning
Look away, look away, look away Dixieland
Glory, glory hallelujah
Glory, glory hallelujah
Glory, glory hallelujah
His truth is marching on
So hush little baby Don't you cry
You know your daddy's bound to die
But all my trials, Lord will soon be over...."
