This issue should be settled by Congress after consultation with military officers. This is what happened in 1993 and it has worked well since!
I like the fact that Pres BO's administration is defending "don't ask, don't tell".
Pres BO's problem is that he made a bunch of stupid campaign promises, such as repealing "DADT" and now has to live with the consequences of disenchanted supporters!
