This is how the AP previewed the speech:
"Obama wasn't expected to announce any new proposals or policy changes.
But feeling pressure from a range of supporters, he was aiming to jump-start the effort he had promised to make a priority in his first year and which advocates had hoped would be completed by now."
This is how The Washington Post previewed the speech:
"Nor is the Justice Department going to announce its decision on a lawsuit in Arizona, where a new law makes it easier for police to detain suspected illegal immigrants. "
So what did he say?
The previews were right: HE SAID NOTHING SPECIFIC!
He called for comprehensive immigration reform but did not send a proposal to Congress.
However, he forgot to tell us that the labor unions forced him to violate NAFTA and close the US-Mex border to Mexican trucks.
And he also forgot to say that the same labor unions will not allow the majority party to pass a proposal that includes a "guest worker program"!
How is this latest effort going to work with "hispanos"?
Not well.
I think that most "hispanos" are starting to get the obvious: Pres BO and the Dem majority do not have the votes, or the will, to debate a real immigration package that includes border security and a guest worker program.
We refer to Ruben Navarrette:
"If President Obama wants to know why immigration reform seems in the water, at least until Spring 2011, he doesn’t have to look far.
He only has to look in the mirror."
