Based on preliminary reports, the PRI will make a comeback tomorrow in state elections across Mexico.
This is from the WSJ:
"The Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which ruled Mexico under a virtual one-party system for much of the past century, is a favorite in many of the races for local representatives and mayors in 14 states."
We understand that these are regional elections. Nevertheless, it does look like the PRI is poised for a comeback in Mexico.
As we've posted often, we like Pres Calderon and understand the difficulties of governing a country as complicated as Mexico.
On the positive side, he has correctly declared war on cartels threatening Mexico's national sovereignty.
On the negative side, he has not called on Pres BO to secure the border, a decision that would do a lot to stop guns and drugs from going back and forth.
We ask again: How does a porous border help Mexico? It does not!
We ask again: How does arguing with Arizona about immigration laws create jobs in Mexico? It does not!
When is a Mexican political party going to tell the truth? Mexico has a "jobs" problem rather than a northern neighbor trying to enforce immigration laws!
In other words, make Mexico more attractive to Mexicans and then you won't have to waste your time wondering what they do in Arizona!
Pres Caderon is also dealing with an international economic crisis and countries directly competing with Mexico for business.
What solutions does the PRI offer to make Mexico a more attractive place to invest or do business?
I don't hear any!
Eventually, Mexico needs a political party, or leader, who will tell voters that Mexico's problems are structural, such as PEMEX and the underachieving agricultural sector.
Mexico also faces a competitive disadvantage because of labor laws that drive companies to China.
Will the new version of the PRI address these structural problems?
Let's hope so but I'm not too optimistic!
Why not? The old version of the PRI created all of these structural problems during their long reign in power!
So let the PRI-istas enjoy their election night results.....but reality will soon spoil the party.
