How can Pres BO move to the center without blowing up the party?
Guess who is advising Pres BO to move to the center?
The answer is William M. Daley, former secretary of commerce in the Clinton administration and chairman of Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign.
Mr. Daley has a warning for the Dems:
"The leaders of the Democratic Party need to move back toward the center -- and in doing so, set the stage for the many years' worth of leadership necessary to produce the sort of pragmatic change the American people actually want." (Daley)
OK. Daley is right. It makes a lot of sense to me!
However, how does Pres BO do it?
First, BO is not Clinton.
Clinton moved to the center and cut deals with Republicans in 1995-96.
The good news: It worked in 1996 because Pres Clinton could run as a centrist for re-election. After all, Pres Clinton ran in 1996 as the guy who signed all of those Republican bills!
The bad news: It did not work for VP Gore who was punished by the 4 million liberals who voted for Nader in 2000.
Second, BO was nominated because he turned on the left wing of the party.
It was the left wing that got him going in all of those early primaries.
They were the ones who got energized and put him over the top. How do you throw your base under the bus?
Yes, Mr. Daley is right.
However, I don't see the party moving to the center unless it gets wiped out in 2010 and the old liberals are kicked out of power!
