Closing GITMO was a great campaign issue for the party out of power.
It is not a fun issue for the same party now responsible for keeping us safe.
Check this out:
"President Barack Obama's allies in the Senate will not provide funds to close the Guantanamo Bay prison next January, a top Democratic official said Tuesday.
With debate looming on Obama's spending request to cover military and diplomatic operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the official says Democrats will deny the Pentagon and Justice Department $80 million to relocate Guantanamo's 241 detainees."
So what's going on?
First, no one has figured what to do with the terrorists currently living in GITMO.
Second, no congressman wants one of these guys in their district.
Third, no senator wants them in their state, specially if you are running for reelection in 2010.
Once again, reality is winning. Abe Greenwald has a good point: "The problem is our new brilliant, empathic, accountable, transparent, and noble administration hasn’t the first clue as to what to do with the detainees."
My guess? Don't be surprised if GITMO stays open specially after Dems tell Pres BO that nobody wants these people. For example, Sen Reid: Keep Gitmo Detainees Out of the U.S.
Better question: Why did Pres BO promise to close GITMO anyway? Again, don't discount the possibility of "closing GITMO" joining the growing list of campaign promises that don't happen!
