A couple of weeks ago, Pres Calderon sent 5,000 soldiers into Cd Juarez, on the other side of El Paso.
So far, you have to say that Pres Calderon did the right thing.
We had LAURENCE ILIFF of The Dallas Morning News on the show last week.
He told us about the military in Cd Juarez.
"So far, President Felipe Calderón's decision to pour in 5,000 more soldiers and Federal Police since mid-March is working, crime statistics show, although some drug cartel killings continue.
And residents are giving the buildup a welcome as warm as the balmy spring weather."
Crime is down and that's a good thing for Cd Juarez and El Paso!
How long will it work? Nobody knows.
I'm sure that there are limits to having the military run a city of 2 million people. It is very costly to support such a military effort!
Obverall, you have to salute Pres Calderon's decision to use the Mexican military.
Again, we ask the same question:
How long can Mexico maintain this war-footing?
"Mexican officials say the cartels operate on a $10 billion annual budget earned from drug sales in the United States; according to U.S. government estimates, they employ 150,000 people.
This year, the Mexican government will spend $9.3 billion on national security, a 99 percent increase since Calderón took office."
It's very critical to support Pres Calderon. We must advance the full monetary commitment under The Merida Plan.
Why are the Dems holding up The Merida Plan? Who knows? How can you help Mexico by holding up The Merida Plan money and getting into a trade war over 90-something trucks?
