What does the CIA do? It spies. It checks up on our enemies.
It also protects us from fanatics who want to blow up a Western City. (Trust me. There are still a lot of those fanatics. They are not giving up terrorism and selecting poetry now that "hope and change" is in the White House)
The CIA has a difficult task.
We do not hear about its successes. We hear about everyone of its mistakes.
Mr. McCarry is an author. He posted Let's Give the CIA Its Due in today's WSJ:
"After all, there has not been a single terrorist act on American soil since 9/11, and al Qaeda and other terrorist groups have seen large numbers of their leaders and operatives hunted down and neutralized.
Obviously the credit for this belongs to many people in and out of government, not just Americans but also some of our allies and friends. But surely the CIA was among the players."
Bottom line: We have not been attacked! Who would have believed that on the morning after 9-11?
This is why so many of us are concerned with Leon Panetta.
Dick Morris is concerned:
"President-elect Barack Obama’s appointments to Homeland Security, the Justice Department and now the CIA indicate a virtual abandonment of the War on Terror."
Bill O'Reilly is concerned, too:
"The choice is perplexing. Mr. Panetta is very smart but has absolutely no intel experience unless you count his days as Bill Clinton's Chief of Staff.
Some old hands inside the CIA are reportedly aghast at the choice.
Former CIA guy Michael Scheuer, who headed up the agency's Bin Laden unit, put it succinctly: "I think they pulled his name out of a hat."
Love him or hate him, the Bush administration has defended the homeland. We have not been attacked again! We have seriously damaged our enemies!
