On balance, Sen. Thompson is closer to the public opinion than any of the others. The public does not want amnesty. It wants labor laws enforced, employers punished and a secured border.
Thompson's program has two interesting ideas. First, use our immigration laws to attract educated immigrants, such as engineers. Second, encourage English immersion.
Fred Thompson has been looking for an opening. He may have found it with this immigration proposal.
