After the 100 hours.....

What was the purpose of the so called 100 hours? It was all about feelings rather than legislation. It was about catching headlines and avoiding the real issues, such as entitlements, the war on terror, Iran, Iraq and immigration reform.

“Of the six items they promised to approve in the first "100 hours" of a new Democratic Congress, three have met resistance from the Democratic Senate, at least one appears likely to be vetoed by President Bush and two others have come under heavy criticism from outside groups.”

The Second 100 Hours by Ruth Marcus is worth reading, specially as it applies to the Democrats and any kind of immigration reform:

"The fissures, internal and external, in the Democratic Party, will start to emerge, like cracks in the Arctic ice shelf.

Internally, Pelosi presides over a motley caucus that agreed to agree on her Six for '06.
Don't bet on similar unanimity over Seven for '07.
She's got some Grumpy Old Chairmen miffed at being elbowed aside during the first 100 hours and put out by the GOP term limits that the new leadership left in place.
She's got Blue Dogs vs. the Black Caucus, urban liberals vs. Western and Southern moderates, all with their own conflicting agendas and electoral pressures.

Externally, the party's natives -- the liberal blogosphere, labor, gays, trial lawyers, environmentalists -- will begin to get restless, like a carful of cranky children on a long trip.
If you don't toss them snacks every so often, they're going to have a meltdown.
But the snack supply is limited, and there's going to be back-seat bickering over who gets theirs first."
